Right now, many international students across the U.S. feel concerned, confused, or even abandoned by policies that may put their futures at risk. Student visas are being used as leverage in ongoing legal fights with universities like Harvard, and were reportedly bargaining chips in recent U.S. trade negotiations with China. But international students and scientists should never be used as political tools.
The recent political tug-of-war has disrupted student lives, as threats to revoke or cancel visas throws research, graduation, and job prospects into chaos. Decisions of this magnitude should be made with care and prudence, not in sweeping policy judgments based on nationality or university affiliation.
Rash threats and actions contradict moral values of fairness and meritocracy. Many generations of scientists first came to America as international students, before going on to start businesses, contribute groundbreaking discoveries, and teach the next generation. Similarly, scientists fleeing authoritarian oppression have contributed to America for 100 years. Now, political whiplash has prospective students around the globe questioning if the U.S. has a place for them.
Tell Congress that potential visa policy changes should be made thoughtfully, with opportunities for public discussion and input. International students and scientists deserve fair and just policies.
