Jorge Nicolás “Nico” Hernández Charpak, Ph.D., is the science policy manager at APS and an APS Career Mentoring Fellow. Dr. Hernández Charpak manages a wide portfolio of policy issues, with a focus on education policy, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and he serves as the APS staff Advisor to the Panel on Public Affairs and the Education Policy Committee. His role includes performing in-depth analysis of policy areas, leading the production of relevant and timely reports aimed at decision makers and direct lobbying in collaboration with the APS Government Affairs team. The focus of his work, and the work of APS Government Affairs, is to advocate to the U.S. federal government on policies that impact the APS community. Before joining APS in 2020, Dr. Hernández Charpak was the associate director of research and knowledge transfer at STROBE, a multi-campus NSF Science and Technology center focused on advancing functional nano-imaging. His work advancing equity and inclusion were recognized by the University of Colorado Presidential Diversity Award in 2020. Dr. Hernández Charpak received his BS in physics and computer engineering from U. de los Andes (Bogotá) in 2011 and his Ph.D. in physics from JILA and the University of Colorado Boulder in 2017.
