Support the National Quantum Initiative Reauthorization Act

The 2018 National Quantum Initiative Act (NQIA) catapulted U.S. quantum information science (QIS) industry forward, establishing 14 multidisciplinary Quantum Information Science (QIS) centers and even more partners across the U.S. Quantum technology is on the National Science and Technology Council’s list of critical and emerging technologies. However, as a five-year authorization, the NQIA now needs to be reauthorized to keep the U.S. competitive in this fast-paced field.

Internationally, the United States only accounts for a small fraction of quantum patents, outpaced by China, Japan, and the European Union. Reauthorizing the NQIA is essential to securing U.S. scientific competitiveness in a field that will impact the future of security, medicine, finance, and more.

Congress should support the NQI Reauthorization Act, which will:

  • Renew and expand existing National QIS Research Centers
  • Create a multidisciplinary hub focused on quantum curriculum and workforce development, as well as quantum technology research and development testbeds at the National Science Foundation
  • Establish up to three National Institute of Standards and Technology centers on quantum engineering, sensing, and measurement
  • Establish “Quantum Foundries” at the Department of Education to meet the device and material needs of the quantum supply chain
