Strong and sustained investments in the federal science agencies — including NASA Science, the National Science Foundation, National Institute of Standards and Technology, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, and the Department of Defense Basic and Applied Research — are the foundation of the U.S. scientific enterprise and critical for training the STEM workforce necessary for the U.S. to remain a global leader.

While strategic allies and competitors alike are increasing their investments in research and development, U.S. federal science agencies are being asked to do more with less. Federally funded research underpins the development of our STEM workforce and powers innovation and discovery.

To keep the U.S. globally competitive, Congress must prioritize agencies that support physical sciences research in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget appropriations process.
