American science and innovation are at risk. We need your help.
Let’s cut to the chase: American science and innovation are at risk, and we need your help.
On May 29, the Administration proposed new regulations that would insert political control deep into the federal science grant process. These proposals would let political preference override expert peer review, restrict travel, limit collaboration, impede the sharing of results, and affect programs that train the next generation of scientists.
We have spent the past year defending science from severe funding cuts, grant terminations, and agency upheaval. This is different. The proposed federal rule would establish regulations that would have politics shadow every research dollar, making it far harder to undo, no matter who holds office next. That is why this moment matters.
APS is responding, alongside many other scientific and engineering organizations. This is not a partisan fight; it is a defense of a system that has served science, and the country, under administrations of both parties for generations.
But our voice alone is not enough. As part of our commitment to helping members communicate the value of science, on June 17 we will give you a specific, concrete way to make your own voice heard through the APS letter-writing portal.
We are taking a little time to do this right. The most effective response to a proposed rule is not just a large number of comments; it is a large number of substantive ones. Comments that raise specific, well-reasoned concerns carry weight in the record, while others can be set aside. So, we are building a tool that helps make your comment both easy to file and strong enough to count.
Until then, we ask one thing: be ready. Watch your inbox, follow APS, and encourage your colleagues to do the same.
We cannot let this stand — and with your help, we won't.
With resolve and gratitude,
