Letter from APS leadership

Act now against new proposed science cuts

April 3, 2026

Earlier today, the Trump Administration released its budget request for fiscal year 2027, eliciting a dreadful deja vu. The Administration has once again proposed massive cuts to federally funded science. If enacted, this budget would obstruct current innovation and future discoveries. The executive branch, however, cannot enact these cuts without Congress. That’s why we need you to tell your lawmakers to prioritize funding science and reject the proposed cuts to DOE Office of Science, NASA Science, NIST, and NSF.

Contact Congress

President Trump is proposing cuts of 13% to the DOE Office of Science, 47% to the NASA Science Mission Directorate, 84% to NIST, and 54% to NSF. If Congress implements these suggestions, STEM students would lose important educational opportunities, scientists would face job losses, and U.S. R&D would fall further behind.

Last year, APS members like you helped fight back similar cuts – together, the scientific community's advocacy restored nearly $10 billion in proposed cuts to DOE Office of Science, NASA Science, NIST, and NSF.

Now is the time to take fresh action. We’ve created a new advocacy campaign with pre-written letters that highlight the local impacts of federal funding in your state. You can make your advocacy even more impactful by adding your own story to your letter.

We know many of us feel tired and frustrated by the continuous barrage of threats to science and scientists, but your advocacy makes a real difference. Once again, we’re planning to amplify your advocacy by building local volunteer teams, supporting meetings with congressional offices, collaborating with APS members to author opinion pieces, and reaching out to the public. We've done it before, and we’re ready to do it again.

Take action

Please help spread the word by sharing this email with your family, friends, and colleagues. Every voice matters.

Thank you for joining us in standing up for scientists and science now and in the future.

Sincerely,
