Take action: Government shutdown hurts science and scientists

Oct. 1, 2025

At midnight last night, government funding expired, closing down the government of the United States. Scientists across the country and beyond will feel the impacts of this shutdown; damage will ripple far outside our physics communities.

Please urge your elected officials to come to an agreement to fund Fiscal Year 2026 and immediately reopen the government, ending this turmoil.

Contact Congress now

The longer the shutdown continues, the more U.S. research projects will face delays, funding interruptions, and uncertainty. A government shutdown stalls the competitive innovation pipeline, which is fundamentally sustained by the contributions of science and scientists.

We need an urgent bipartisan solution from Congress to end this shutdown.

APS Government Affairs staff has prewritten a letter you can quickly send to ask Congress to end this government shutdown immediately. But, we encourage you to take five extra minutes to personalize your letter with why you care about this issue. Unique letters have 10 times the impact on congressional offices.

Even during this challenging moment, APS remains committed to creating pathways for collaboration, connection, and communication across the global scientific enterprise. Thank you for staying engaged, and for being an advocate for science.
