Educator Naeem Ullah transforms girls' education in conflict-affected Swat District, Pakistan

Educator Naeem Ullah is using the teaching of physics as a strategy to transform the lives of girls in Pakistan’s conflict-affected Swat District. Due to regional instability, the girls are often in fear of their safety, and therefore, fail to attend school and finish their education. Many of them also lack the confidence to pursue a career in science because they see so few women with positions in the field.

“I have witnessed firsthand the challenges students — particularly girls — encounter in accessing quality science education [in the Swat District],” Ullah says.

To support the girls, Ullah has designed programs that strengthen their scientific knowledge and help them overcome their fears of pursuing an education due to their gender and conflicts in the Swat District. One of his initiatives, “Women in Physics: From Fear to Future – Girls’ Education in the Shadow of Terrorism in District Swat,” involves encouraging female participation in a field previously inaccessible to them.

Ullah says he’s committed to helping the girls, despite the demanding work involved in designing and executing his programs, as well as helping the girls remain encouraged in the face of adversity.

“My students are my greatest motivation. Their curiosity and determination, despite challenging circumstances, inspire me to continue my efforts,” he says.

Ullah says he’s grateful that his work is supported by his APS membership.

“It has greatly enriched my professional journey by connecting me with a global network of physicists and educators,” he says. “It has provided access to valuable academic resources, research, and professional development opportunities, enabling me to strengthen my teaching practices and align my work with global standards in physics education.”

Ullah, recently named an APS Global Spotlight Member, views the accolade as recognition for the entire region, not just his work. He adds that the award "represents not only my personal efforts but also the resilience and potential of the community I serve.”
