Importance of Scientific Evaluation of Major Research Facilities Funding
Last approved by the council on Oct. 20, 2026
APS considers it essential that major scientific research facilities funding decisions included in the federal budget be informed by comprehensive technical review by scientific experts prior to allocation of appropriated federal funds.
Context
Congress considers a variety of factors, such as geographical balance and economic need, when allocating funds for major projects. In the case of major scientific facilities, impartial assessment of the project’s scientific merit should be one of the primary drivers for funding decisions and should be considered and undertaken by experts. This kind of technical review helps ensure that funds for science are allocated to projects of the highest quality and scientific priority.
The review process for any statement may be started at any time if deemed necessary by the Panel on Public Affairs, and at least once every five years.
