K-12 Assessment and Science
Adopted by the Council on April 27, 2001
Last approved by the council on Oct. 20, 2026
Mandated K-12 testing or assessment programs should include science to encourage time and resources spent on science and ensure well-rounded, capable students and an informed citizenship. It is well- documented that assessments influence not only content taught, but also time devoted to topics and the very nature of classroom activity.
Assessments should also promote the understanding of science as more than merely a body of facts. This ensures testing and assessment covers methods of observation, experimentation, and modes of thinking used in the scientific method.
